German luxury heavyweights — Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi — are remaking their lineups for the new age with fleets of battery-powered models.

BMW's latest 4-Series family has an electric option in the form of the i4 hatchback. The car is a new addition to the BMW lineup for 2022 and in i4 M50 guise, it delivers up to 536 hp and is a hoot to drive. MG is going electric in most markets where it operates, but its redesigned MG 7 sedan sticks with internal-combustion power. The handsome...

The BMW i4 eDrive40 delivered to my door by BMW looks almost indiscernible from a 4-series internal combustion engine vehicle. It even has what appear to be exhaust pipes out the back. I imagine the pitch for this car in some Bavarian BMW corporate office was something like: Look, Tesla is eating our lunch, let’s please just make an EV version of the 4 series to take on the Model 3. It will take almost no effort, we’ll just rip out the ICE components and throw in a battery and some electric motors. It will barely appear on the balance sheet. How bad could that be? Yet somehow this is still a very compelling EV, and I’d argue a lot better than the 4-series it is masquerading as. It is even better than the Model 3 in a bunch of ways… more… The post The Electrek Review: BMW i4 eDrive40 is low effort but still highly enjoyable experience appeared first on Electrek.

BMW has just launched the iX and i4 electric vehicles, as well as an electric version of the current 3-Series exclusively in China, but these will be superseded starting from 2025 by a new generation of BMW electrics based on a platform dubbed the Neue Klasse (German for “New Class”). BMW is hydrogen's biggest advocate among German automakers as it plots a path to zero emissions. It will start limited production of a hydrogen fuel-cell X5 at the end of the year.

Electric cars like the BMW iX increase manufacturing carbon footprint by 40% German firm also targets supply chain as a whole in a bid to reduce overall emissions by 20% A major operational reset in BMW's factory and supply chain is hunting down huge, 60% savings in CO2 by 2030 to offset rising energy use as the company pushes towards net-zero carbon. At odds with their capacity to slash carbon output in use, electric car batteries are actually increasing carbon production in manufacturing, because of the heavy energy consumption of the mining/refining process for the rare earth metals used inside the cells. In fact, BMW's analysis suggests that the switch to battery-electric powertrains for its whole output of 2.5 million cars will increase the

Photo by Roberto Baldwin for The Verge BMW issued a recall notice for a “small number” of 2022 i4 sedans and iX SUVs due to the risk of battery fires. According to the recall, the high voltage battery “may have internal damage,” which can result in an electrical short circuit. The recall only covers 83 vehicles that have been sold in the US, but BMW is advising owners not to drive them, to park them outside or away from other vehicles and structures that could catch on fire, and not to charge them. BMW dealers will replace the battery free of charge. The recall was issued after BMW became aware of “a non-US field incident involving a 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40” last April.
